The difference between country music and other forms of entertainment is real country comes straight from the rock solid foundation of real world experience. Billy Currington is the personification of this definition. Born in Ricon, Georgia to parents who had a true appreciation for country music Billy learned early what he liked about music in general and country music in particular. He doesn’t try to hide his Southern roots in his music, either. He says, "Southern means down home ‚ fried chicken, my grandparents, my family and the way they raised me and the way we carry ourselves through life. My music is based on the life that a Southern boy has lived, the way we do things. Music lives and breathes down there. The gospel lives there, and the blues and the steel guitars and the fiddles. They are definitely part of the Southern heritage."

Billy’s stepfather always kept something good and country playing in his house. "The first album I ever got was Kenny Rogers, which my mom gave me for Christmas when I was 10," he says. "After that, I went out and bought every one of them and played them all the time. Then she took me to a concert and I fell in love with Kenny Rogers. He's a guy who can sing it all and sell the song."

When Billy was in high school he attended a friend’s church who used a musical blend of country and gospel in their Christian message. Billy made a great impression on the minister of this congregation, so much so the minister drove Billy to Nashville to audition as a singer at the Opryland USA theme park. Billy didn’t get hired but did realize his destiny was that of a Nashville songwriter and performer. Billy made the move to Nashville working days with a concrete company six days a week 16 hour days. Though this job was pretty lucrative Billy songwriter friends encouraged him to take a job more in tune with someone who is pursuing a career in music. He took a job part time as a personal trainer and met Gary Voorhies, who was a client and an employee at a music publishing company. Next thing you know Gary got a publishing deal. After that, a demo Billy did produced by Carson Chamberlain was heard by Luke Lewis of Universal Music Group who signed Billy to Mercury Records. The rest, as they say, is history.

Billy co-wrote four songs on the CD Doin’ Somethin’ Right: "Why, Why, Why," "Here I Am," "Whole Lot More" and "She's Got A Way With Me. Billy wrote ‘She’s Got a Way WIth Me’ with singer/songwriter Michael McDonald at his Franklin home. Billy says, "The Michael McDonald experience has been my favorite yet. Having the opportunity to share whatever it was the studio in his house where we recorded the demo, the small room we wrote it in, the conversations on the phone, the invitations to hang out together all of those things are my favorite experiences of this year."

While he’s been named People Magazine’s 25 Most Beautiful People Billy still manages to keep his life in proper perspective. He says, "I've never been to a town where I didn't see a concrete truck. I always remember doing that work and am so thankful that I don't do that anymore. I'm not above it, it's just not what I love. I love what I'm doing now. I am so thankful that I get to do what I love."

Billy’s latest CD, “Doin’ Somethin’ Right” is a great display of just what kind of fantastic talent he possesses. There’s even a bit of a tribute to one of his early inspirations, Kenny Rogers, with Billy’s cover of “Lucille”. From Billy’s country rockin’ “I Wanna Be A Hillbilly” to “She Knows What To Do With A Saturday Night”, this CD is worth a listen.
